John is a GP Partner at Brooklands Medical Practice in South Manchester. He previously spent 2 years working in London whilst specialising in the new NHS speciality of Sport and Exercise Medicine.
He currently also works as a medical officer for UK Athletics and spent a year in London working as endurance medical officer to UK Athletics. His experience also includes 18 months working at Chelsea FC looking after the academy players there aged
9 - 18.
From 2005 - 2007 John worked at Wellness International at adidas (UK). This job involved exercise medicine and cardiopulmonary exercise stress testing a range of people from the weekend warrior through to elite athletes.
The following conditions are ones which he commonly sees and manages in athletes:
Medical conditions related to sport:
- Exercise Induced Asthma
- Unexplained Underperformance Syndrome(previously known as the Overtraining Syndrome)
- Iron deficiency with and without anaemia
- Heart and cardiovascular problems associated with exercise:
(palpitations, chest pain, dizziness and collapse, family history of heart problems or sudden cardiac death,
exercise related transient abdominal pain) - Allergies in athletes
- Female athlete triad
(irregular or no periods, low bone mineral density and disordered eating) - Sports related concussion
Overuse and traumatic sports injuries such as:
- Stress fractures
- Achilles and patellar tendinopathy
- Calf and shin pain related to exercise
- Chronic groin pain due to a variety of causes
- Anterior knee pain (pain at the front of the knee)
- Other knee injuries such as cartilage and ligament tears
- Chronic low back pain due to stress fractures or disc problems
- Shoulder injuries such as dislocations, rotator cuff tears and labral tears
Following assessment John can refer patients on for further scans and investigations treatment with our physiotherapists or administer appropriate medication or injections such as corticosteroid injection.

Hayley is a registered Dietitian who studied dietetics at Newcastle University in Australia, and later
completed a Masters degree in paediatric nutrition in London and a PGCert in Sports Nutrition at the
University of Coventry . She has worked in the NHS and privately for the past 11 years and has
specialised in paediatrics, gastroenterology and allergy. She has recently worked with elite athletes
from Loughborough and local running clubs.
Hayley’s extensive knowledge of nutrition has helped her with her own running performance.
Recent running highlights have included representing Manchester county in cross country, winning
the Malta marathon (2010), achieving a PB at the London Marathon 2011 (13th lady). She has run a
marathon in the Swiss Alps twice and last year ran 50miles in the Swiss Alpine ultramarathon, using
the Manx Mountain Marathon (33miles, 3rd lady) as a warm up.
